Abraham allowed Lot to choose where he would go. The act of separation brought out a decisive difference in the two men -a difference of vision. Abraham’s vision stretched beyond the things of time-out of this world into an external future. Lot, on the other hand , saw no further than his present surroundings. Each man’s vision determined not only the course in life that he himself followed, but also the destiny of his family.
Lot’s vision determined the course he took. He was irresistibly drawn toward the wealth and fertility of Sodom and was blind to the extreme sinfulness and perversion of sodom’s inhabitants. Even though he had not followed the sinful practices of the people, he had made himself one with them ( ” sitting in the gate ” ) by helding a position of authority in the community.
When wrath of God came down on Sodom – from the safety of the mountains to which he had fled – looking down on the smouldering ruin that had once been Sodom, and on the pillar of salt that had once been his wife ” he must have told himself ” I led my whole family and group of people into this place , but the only once who followed me out were these two daughters of mine ”
Will you put yourself into Lot’s place and imagine ” If only I had made different choices ! If only I had stayed closer to Abraham !
What kind of vision am I imparting to my family and organisation as a leader ? Am I inculcating eternal values that will direct them into lives of service of God & mankind ? Or am I concerned primarily with worldly success – a career, material comfort , financial independence, status in the community ?
God bless you abundantly and make you a blessing to so many across the globe.
