We read in the bible the Prodigal son is going through a tough time – especially when the health & money runs out, his “plan” runs around upon something out of his control – a famine, but he’s not giving up – he is still going to try hard to take care of himself without anybody’s support.
Earlier he considers feeding pigs under a Gentile stranger is better than going home and facing the shame and humiliation of the village and his family. Now he thinks he can work his way out of this situation! He does not intend to go to his father and just throw himself on his mercy, but actually comes up with a plan.
What was his plan? He wants to get his father to allow him to work off his debt by working as a hired servant like others who have “bread enough to spare”.
But the father restores him as a trusted son without completing his speech as he planned – his plan to earn off his debt (evaporates) when he sees the father’s love! It is the father’s robe that clothes him with honor and the ring is the signet ring used to make contracts etc. (it symbolizes trust) and the shoes signify restored dignity.
Moreover his father throws a party – he is filled with joy and wants to share it with everyone! Normally a fatted calf would feed 175 to 200 people! Clearly the father wants the reconciliation publicly recognized!
